There is no doubt that most tattoo parlors in the Western World have been dealing with broadly similar requests for tattoo designs from their customers for years, and you can imagine that this probably gets a bit boring  for the tattoo artist.  Along with the old standby tattoo designs which everyone recognizes, add to this group, the film star or the celebrity who is cool at the time, and it is hardly surprising that there is an undercurrent of belief that tattoo designs are just a way of following the crowd. The Most Popular Tattoo Designs

There are many tattoo designs to choose from, giving people a chance to be creative.  Below, we will take a look at some of the most popular tattoo designs.

Tattoos are a common thing these days.  They are more popular than ever before.  Studies have shown that nearly 1 in 4 people have at least one or more tattoo designs.  Long gone are the old beliefs that tattoos are only for thugs and bikers.

Tribal tattoos are among the most popular tattoo designs.  They have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years and they are always evolving and becoming more and more complex with their designs and styles.  Tribal tattoo designs can either be the traditional black style that cover the arms and the legs or the more colorful styles that can cover every area of the body.  The colorful, more modern tattoo designs are becoming more and more popular when compared to other styles.

The “old school” styles of tattoo designs are also popular.  Anchors and things like that are making a great comeback these days and not just with sailors.  These tattoo designs were very common and very popular back in the 60s.  They are rapidly gaining their popularity back, as females and males are getting anchors and swallow designs tattooed on them more and more.

Lower back tattoo designs  are the most common for women.  The lower back is one of the most sexual and sensual areas on a women, making this an ideal spot for a tattoo.  Tribal tattoo designs are the most popular, although flowers, dragons, and other symbols make great tattoos as well.  The lower back offers plenty of natural curves as well, which can make for an innovative tattoo.  Often times, women tend to include tribal tattoo designs that spread, covering the base of their hips as well.

Dragon tattoo designs are another popular type style of tattoos.  They were popular in the past, and are now starting to get their popularity back.  There are a lot of different dragon tattoo designs to choose from, including the mythical dragon and ancient Chinese dragon.  Dragons are great on the chest for males and the back for females.  Dragon tattoo designs  can be virtually any size, although most males tend to have them cover one side of their chest or the upper region of their arms.

Celtic tattoo designs are also popular as well.  They are mostly seen with those who have a Celtic heritage, although some with no Celtic heritage have them as well.  They offer a variety of symbols and designs, providing universal meanings for everyone.  Often times they are mixed with tribal tattoo designs to create a more innovative tattoo.

Prison Tattoos And Their Meanings

Prison tattoos have a long history and their various meanings are hard for the average person to recognize.

Although the vast majority of  the tattoo community have never seen the inside of a prison, there is a history around prison tattoos which link several designs to the prison system. Within the prison different groups may be represented by different prison tattoos – and the really confusing part is that similar prison tattoos can mean radically different things to different people.

As an example, a spider web tattoo,  on one’s arm, can mean a number of things. Frequently these prison tattoos represent that the bearer is stuck in time, standing still as life goes on outside. Another meaning of this prison tattoo, is that the bearer has a drug addiction. Additionally, it is a popular tattoo among members of the extreme racist Aryan Brotherhood. A fellow white supremacist gang, the Aryan Circle, often have prison tattoos bearing the number 13 (“A” being the first letter of the alphabet and “C” being the third).  The number 13 is also worn by some Hispanic gangs, thus creating some confusion.

Another example of prison tattoos, which represent the violence often encountered on the inside, is the teardrop tattoo. Most often this tattoo means that the person bearing it has killed someone. More than one teardrop tattoo beneath their eye means they have killed more than once.  An empty tear can mean an unsuccessful murder attempt, or that a friend has been murdered. A tear that is full at the bottom and empty at the top means that the death of a friend or loved one has been avenged. In Australian prisons, teardrop tattoos are often forced on convicted child molesters.

It is important to remember that no matter how cool your tattoo may look to you, there may be someone to whom it has a totally meaning. This doesn’t mean that everyone with a spider web tattoo is a racist, and not everyone with a  number 13 tattoo is a gang member. For reference the number 13 is also considered to be a symbol of bad luck.

Tattoos – Where Is The Best Place To Put Them?

Deciding where to put your tattoos requires some careful consideration.

When it comes to the question of  “where should I put my tattoos“, there is no doubt some interesting debates both with other people and inside your head. Especially if this is your first tattoo.  In order to answer this question you must first consider this. Your body is generally split into two distinct areas – the area covered by clothes most of the time, and the one that people will see.

The area of your body which is usually covered by clothes is generally regarded as the safest part to have put your  tattoos. There are going to be times, like going for a  job interview, attending weddings or other formal occasions, and other situations where you might not want other people see your tattoos.  This is also an important consideration if your job involves having to deal with the public as many employers frown on tattoos which could affect their business. So getting your tattoos on the parts of your body that are usually hidden my clothing a safe choice.

Perhaps the favorite place for tattoos, which is a compromise between hidden and being in plain view, is the biceps. Tattoos placed here will be seen by those who should be seeing them, but easily hidden from those who should not. While the forearm is another popular place to put tattoos, remember that you will need a long sleeve shirt or blouse to cover them and this can be very uncomfortable if you don’t work where it’s air conditioned during the summer.

Other safe locations for men considering tattoos would be the chest, back, shoulder, or calves. For women desiring tattoos these would include the lower back and upper thigh since these areas can easily be hidden with a dress.

Ultimately the decision of  where to put your tattoos is yours. But a little thought now can save you major headaches later.
